Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler believes his side still have a chance of making the play-offs after Saturday’s win over Macclesfield.

The 2-0 victory came courtesy of goals from Matt Fish and Chris Whelpdale, leaving The Gills ninth in League Two, but crucially just four points from Cheltenham Town in seventh with six games to go.

Cheltenham’s loss to Southend on Friday night, combined with Oxford United’s loss to Morecambe and Crewe being held at home by Northampton has given The Gills the opportunity to move closer to a play-off spot and Hessenthaler believes his side can still do it:

“I’m very pleased with the win, it gives us a real chance of getting the play-offs,” he said to BBC Radio Kent.

“Look at what a difference one week makes. Anything can happen in football and we’re back in with a shout again, the pressure is on other teams as well as we’re the only team in that top eight who got a result I think.”

“I’ve always believed we can get there. It’s only a couple of wins, and a couple of results the other way, and we’re in there. We know what we have to do, now we have to go to Bristol Rovers and get a result and we believe we can do that.”

“I’m very pleased with the performance, it was a great response to the game on Tuesday. We’ve got to take a lot of belief from [this] for the end of the season.”

The Easter period will go a long way to deciding whether Gillingham can make the play-offs with the Bristol Rovers trip to come on Good Friday, whilst Dagenham & Redbridge come to Priestfield on Easter Monday.
